Double Lip Line: Lush Natural Looking Lips

A new bombshell has entered the villa: the double lip line technique! Double lip lining has taken the internet by storm, and today, we’re going to help you learn everything you need to know about achieving this naturally luscious look.

There are loads of different methods for creating the illusion of naturally bigger, plumper lips. Amongst the most popular are overlining, highlighting the cupid’s bow, and using lip-plumping gloss. Though these methods are tried-and-true, we’re always looking for the next big thing.

What Is a Double Lip Line?

The double lip line method is inspired by the appearance of naturally double-lined lips, sometimes referred to as a pronounced vermillion border. Lips come in all shapes and sizes, and many people have a visible second line around the edge of their lips.

Beauties with this additional raised line sometimes struggle to decide which line they should apply their makeup products to. With a bold border, it can be a little tricky to make your lipstick look as clean and precise as you want.

How To Apply Lipstick to Double Lip Lines

If you have naturally double lined lips and your lipstick tends to look like it’s leaking onto your skin, we are here to walk you through your lipstick application, step by step.

Prep and Conceal

Before you put makeup on your lips, we recommend exfoliating them with a lip scrub and hydrating them with lip balm. This smooth, moisturized base will contribute to a clean finish.

Now, let’s get started. Grab some concealer that matches your skin tone and cover your double lip line wherever they are on your lips. Make sure to stop as you reach the middle of your lips — this area should remain untouched.

Line Your Lips

At this point, you have eliminated the appearance of a double lip line. Use the remaining visible lip line — your inner lip line — to apply lip liner to the corners of your mouth. Let your mouth rest naturally as you line just above and below your concealer. Once again, stop right before you reach the middle.

Now, let’s focus on the middle of your lips. Moving forward, we’re now going to apply the lip liner to the outer lip line. This might feel like you’re putting makeup on your face and not your lips, but don’t let this psych you out. Trust the process!

Now that the middle area of your mouth has been lined on the bottom and along your cupid’s bow, you’re going to notice a disconnect between the inner and outer lines. Fix this problem by rounding out the liner on the midsection of your lips and connecting it to the liner on the corners of your lips.

Fill In and Finish Lips

You’re welcome to fill in the rest of your lips however you like, but for maximum pout, fill in the corners of your lips to make the sides of your mouth look smaller (this works best if your liner is on the darker side). Blend the liner slightly inwards.

Now that the corners of your lips appear pinched, create some contrast and highlight the middle part of your lips to make them look even more luscious. Think of it like contour, but for your lips!

Take a lighter shade of liner, gloss, or even concealer, and apply a small amount to the area of your mouth that you want to look the largest. Concentrate on the middle of your lower lip or the space with the least amount of liner.

Pat your lips gently together to spread this dab of product onto your upper lip, below the cupid’s bow. You can repeat this brightening process as many times as you like. Feel free to go back in with your liner to clean or darken the edges.

Leave your lips as they are or apply some gloss, lipstick, or lip oil to complete your pouty look!

What Are Some Other Lip-Lining Methods Worth Trying?

Not sold on the double lip line technique? No problem! There are plenty of different lip-plumping makeup methods for you to try. Here are some additional ideas to help you achieve the fuller, sculpted lips of your dreams.

Overline Your Lips

One way to make your lips look bigger is to overline your lips. This super popular makeup technique involves using a liner that matches your natural lip color to draw a new line beyond the edges of your mouth.

Overlining the corners of your mouth can be tricky. To keep things looking natural and avoid that unwanted clown look, keep most of your overlining in the middle. By focusing on lengthening the area around your cupid's bow and the center of your bottom lip, you’ll achieve greater fullness.

Finally, use your finger or a brush to blend your liner into your lips and eliminate any harsh lines — there should be no flesh colored skin visible on your newly plumped lips. You can also use your liner to cover the rest of your lips entirely.

Highlight Your Cupid’s Bow

Another way to make your lips look bigger is to highlight your cupid’s bow. The cupid’s bow is the middle area of your upper lip that has two peaks and curves inward. Everyone’s cupid bow is a little different, and some are more pronounced than others.

Take a small amount of highlighter and place it carefully on the top of your cupid’s bow to make your lip appear more voluminous. Make your lips look even bigger by adding some highlight to the center of your bottom lip. Brightening this area will contribute to the lush lip illusion.

Contour Around Your Lips

Highlighting isn’t the only way to make your lips look naturally bigger — you can also use contouring. Contouring is when you use dark makeup shades to create shadows on your face. With contouring, you can make your features look bigger or smaller than usual.

Creating a soft contour around your lips can make them look more pronounced. Focus especially below your bottom lip to help create a pout effect. You can also apply contour lightly around the corners of your mouth to build some more depth.

Use Lip Plumping Products

Many people turn to lip-plumping products to make their lips appear bigger. Plumping lip glosses are commonly made with ingredients that make your lips tingle, such as peppermint, cinnamon, ginger, and capsaicin.

These ingredients are designed to stimulate blood flow and enhance circulation, which in turn makes your lips look plumper than usual. The glossiness reflects light and adds some shine, creating the illusion that your lips are full and voluminous.
